What is My Role in Ministry at Flying H
The Flying H is a family centered ministry, meaning the whole family can take part in some way. So what is my role at Flying H? I feel very confident that first and foremost my calling in life and even at the Flying H is to be a wife and mother to my family. You can read our story of how God called us to the Flying H here. Because of the nature of this ministry the boys at the Flying H often eat meals with the different staff families. We also have events throughout the year that include both the boys and the staff families.
One of our goals of the program is to help families restore relationship with their son. So just being together as a family gives us opportunities to be an example of a family enjoying each other. Of course, this also means that we need to nurture our own relationships with Christ and one another in our family. We need the Lord’s help in our own lives to love one another well so must abide in Him.
My Role in the Kitchen
Many of the wives and some of the husband’s as well share the responsibilities of cooking meals for the boys and on duty staff. On average I cook two meals a week at the Flying H. I often cook a breakfast. My favorite breakfast to cook for the boys is waffles. My Grandma often cooked waffles for us grandchildren and we always looked forward to Gram’s waffles. When I got married one of the gifts my Grandma gave me was a waffle maker just like hers. I use that one and two others to make enough waffles in about 20 minutes! I also make them homemade whip cream and put out syrup, peanut butter, yogurt and sausage!
My other meals is generally a dinner and that meals varies quite a bit from week to week. Some of my favorite dinners to make are taco soup, loaded baked potato soup, quesadillas, or chicken alfredo.
Creative ways I serve at the Flying H
I collect pictures throughout the year from the staff and the students who took photography class. From there I organize them and pick the top ones to compile the boys yearbook each year. I also plan two fun nights of fellowship each year for the students and staff families.
Literary Night
Literary Night is one of the events I put on near the end of the school year. This event was inspired by a former staff familiy. They were reading the Little House Series and got the idea from a similar night the families in the book put on. On Lit Night we get together, staff families and the boys in the program and we share a pot luck meal followed by poems, songs, Bible memory work, readings, skits, jokes and so on. It is basically like a talent show and anyone can participate.
Old Fashioned Christmas
Before the students head out on Christmas Break we put on a big Christmas party for them. Planning this event is also part of my role at the Flying H. We start the night with a potluck dinner, followed by Christmas Carols, then Christmas play put on by the staff kids. After the play we open the floor up to anyone who wants to share a performance. When the performances are done we present the boys with big “stockings” full of presents that are both from staff families and supporters that asked to contribute. We end the night with Bingo in the dining room!
