A Long Overdue Laundry Room Make Over
When we moved into our current home 5 years ago we had way too much stuff. I had little time to figure out what to do with it all. The Laundry room was jammed packed! It also functions as a hallway of sorts from the garage to the rest of the house and it was a constant tripping hazard. It has always been an unorganized mess; the place where everything without a home is thrown.
I am a big fan of Dawn at The Minimal Mom on YouTube. We have been very slowly working towards minimizing our house for years. Like 8 to be exact! I saved the laundry room and garage for last. Especially since we often throw what we declutter into them. This fall I was finally able to attack this space! And for the first time in my married life (going on 20 years) I finally have a laundry room I enjoy being in!
Make it Function Correctly
The first thing I did was remove everything that didn’t belong in the laundry room. We had two huge built in bookshelves. They are not deep enough to use for linens so that was out. Over the years we tried keeping books and DVDs on them. We also tried using them as pantry shelves but they are pretty far from the kitchen. I didn’t like how cluttered they looked all the time in either of these situations. I decided to clear them off entirely.

Make it Pretty
I am a very visual person. If a space is pretty and functional I am far more motivated to keep it clean. Between the thrift stores and TJ Maxx I was able to get some cute vintage pieces and quite a few baskets for the shelves. I added an extra lamp we weren’t using to the shelves above our washer for a dim light in the evenings. Some glass canisters for our powdered cleaners along with squirt bottles from Amazon for my Thieves laundry soap. I used the baskets for extra paper products, cleaning cloths, extra hand towels, wash cloths, beach towels, pillow cases and first aid supplies.
